SEL and Restorative Practices: School-Wide Integration and Practice
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Practices (RP) are core elements in many schools’ academic and climate improvement efforts. They are powerfully complementary and used together can help develop an authentically safe and supportive school climate and reduce disproportionate discipline. This session will highlight strategies used, and lessons learned, through an integrated SEL and RP implementation at Charles W. Henry School in Philadelphia. Presenters will actively engage participants to 1) explore and discuss what educators need to successfully implement integrated RP and SEL strategies, 2) experience the basic elements of a restorative circle, and 3) take away practical integration tools and strategies for staff training, implementation support and sustainability of SEL and RP.
Jody Greenblatt oversees school climate and safety for the School District of Philadelphia. She provides training for and supports systemic implementation of SEL and RP throughout the district.
Keith Hickman is the Director of Continuing Education for the International Institute for Restorative Practices and has worked with school districts across the U.S. He is currently working with CASEL and Committee for Children on integrating restorative practices into the five core competencies of Social-Emotional Learning
Juliet Kandel has worked in SEL, violence and substance abuse prevention since 1989. Formerly a district and school-level prevention coordinator, she has been with the non-profit Committee for Children since 2003 where she is the Implementation and Partnerships Manager. She supports systemic SEL implementations across the country through consultation, strategic partnerships and professional development. Juliet is committed to discovering and supporting what it is that adults need in order for children to get the greatest benefit from SEL instruction.
Fatima Rogers is Principal at C.W. Henry School in Philadelphia, PA. The school is implementing a comprehensive school climate strategy, including SEL and Restorative Practices and Ms. Rogers is leading the effort. Ms. Rogers' expertise as a school administrator, her inclusive leadership strategies, as well as her understanding that school climate is the foundation for academic success combine to make her an excellent presenter on the real world issues and benefits of implementing SEL and RP together.
