Fast Track Students to Read Multisyllable Words in Five Minutes a Day!

Thursday February 23, 2017
2:15 - 2:45 PM
Exhibit Stage 101

Do you have a large number of students in grades 3-8 who aren’t comprehending grade-level or content text because they are weak in reading unfamiliar multisyllable words? Come ready to participate during this session where the presenter will have you gesturing and calling out the answers. This multisensory technique, which is in use in hundreds of Title 1 schools, can be used in small groups or whole class and is taught for merely 5 minutes a day. Teachers report that students enjoy it so much they will remind you if you skip it on a day. Students are fully engaged answering chorally by pointing to the vowel letters, holding up finger gestures to signal which syllable type, and reading syllables and then words together. This technique has a game-like feel and there is a level playing field where ELLs and struggling readers aren’t at a disadvantage. You will leave with a handout so you can teach it the next day.
