Calling All H.E.R.O.E.S: A Quest to Give the Power of Interventions Back to Teachers
Students across our country are sitting in front of a computer screen day after day, receiving an intervention through a packaged program that yields minimal gains towards their academic achievement. We are proposing a radical transformation by placing the power of interventions back into the hands of teachers. Our program, Helping Educators Regain Opportunities to Empower Students (H.E.R.O.E.S), takes a new look at providing meaningful, research-based interventions to all students. By applying a tiered intervention process, monitoring and analyzing multiple data sources, and providing job-embedded professional development, teachers become the best intervention program students receive. In this presentation, participants will gain practical strategies to revolutionize their approach to interventions in order to increase success for all students.

Mrs. Horn has been instrumental in the research, design and implementation of the H.E.R.O.E.S program at Havre de Grace Elementary. She has provided ongoing training to teachers and administrators on how to implement the tiered intervention process and the best practices of interventions at the classroom level. Mrs. Horn provides job-embedded professional development for teachers through planning, coaching and modeling lessons in order to strengthen the teacher's capacity to deliver successful interventions. Through Mrs. Horn's efforts in the H.E.R.O.E.S program, the school's reading scores on the state assessment have been ranked first in the county and third in the state for all Title I schools.
Ms. Schaub has participated as a teacher in the pilot years of H.E.R.O.E.S, with her class of special education and general education students reaching 100% proficiency on the state assessment. She worked to reform the data analysis process in order to develop a continuous process that identifies areas of needs of students, matches those needs to classroom-based interventions, and identifies ways to build the teacher's capacity to meet those needs.
