AVID: Meeting the Challenge of Common Core Standards, College and Career Readiness
College and career readiness, Common Core Standards and infusing rigor into all classrooms are forefront topics in American education today. Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID’s K-12 systemic approach provides the ‘how’ for these initiatives. Practical ideas from AVID’s WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading) strategies will be shared. Participants will view the impact of AVID in a national longitudinal study of college persistence as well as a six year study in Washington state. Also included will be anecdotal examples from Title I sites in Utah and Washington state.

Susan Bergman has been the AVID State Director for seven years and prior to that served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Mount Vernon (WA) School District where she also served as AVID District Director and managed Entitlement grants.
Stacy Van Hercke
Stacy VanHercke has been an AVID Consultant and Trainer for the past 10 years and is currently the AVID Program Manager for Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. She oversees 64 K-12 schools in her region. Stacy spent 20 years in the classroom and administration, often working in Title I schools, prior to joining AVID. She received her K-12 Administration License and Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix.
