My Brother’s Keeper
On February 27th, the President announced the creation of a task force to implement My Brother’s Keeper. The Deputy Secretary of Education is the executive director of the task force. The aim of the task force is to develop a wide-ranging program to impact the lives of “boys and men of color.” The US Department of Education (USED) is charged with creating a portal for sharing information about programs that work in turning around the lives of boys, especially those below the age of 15. This will include early childhood initiatives as well as school-based programs. Well over 80% of the African-American, Hispanic, and Native American young men in the fourth grade are reading below grade level as compared with 54% of Caucasian young men.
