On Wednesday, June 12th the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee passed S. 1094 the Strengthening America's Schools Act of 2013 out of committee. It was on a party line vote. To read a summary of the measure go to the statement by the Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin (D-IA) here.
The next step is that of the process. Both the chairman and ranking member, Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) both are pushing to get the measure through the process. To do so the next challenge is to get floor time in the Senate. Education measures are rarely quick moving bills in the Senate and this one would be no exception.
Next week, on June 19th the House education committee is scheduled to markup it's reauthorization proposal.
